Last July, Fraser and I made a significant decision to move from Greenock to Partick. This wasn’t just a spur-of-the-moment choice; it came after weeks of feeling God’s clear guidance on where we were meant to be. The move was about more than just a change of scenery and church; it involved finding a new school for our youngest daughter, Georgia, and facing the reality that I would likely need to change jobs.
At the time, I was working part-time as a specialist physiotherapist for a charity supporting two care homes in Greenock. Commuting was possible, but I knew deep down that I needed a change. The thought of leaving a familiar job and stepping into something new was daunting. However, during the 40 Days of Prayer last year and again during the Fasting Week in January, I prayed for a job that would not only be easy to commute to from our new home but would also excite me and align with my skills. One of our goals with this move was to go car-free, as our new build didn’t entitle us to a parking permit, so an accessible job was crucial.
In June, just as we were in between our old home and new home, I came across a job listing that immediately caught my eye. It was for a women’s health specialist physiotherapist position at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow. The role seemed tailor-made for me and the job description sparked a lot of interest and excitement. However, there were challenges — the job was full-time, and I hadn’t worked full-time in over 20 years. Moreover, it was a different specialty, something I hadn’t explored in my career before.
I consulted with fellow physiotherapists, and realised that I had the transferable skills required for this new role & applied for the job. The interview was scheduled for July 31st, just five days after our move and only one day after our furniture arrived from storage. It was one of the most stressful periods I’ve ever experienced having to study for an interview during an already stressful house move. I got the job! It’s a short 10-15 minute bus ride from our new home to the hospital’s maternity unit. I prayed for a job that was straight-forward to get to and that would spark my interest and motivation. I start on the 9th Sept, a year after I started praying for it.
